16th. instant, I have the honour to inform you that Mr. W. E. Crow, Government Analyst, has elected to accept the sum of $180 of- fered to him to enable him to leave the Colony at once in pre- ference to remaining in Hong-Kong on a monthly alimentary al- lowance of $120, and that he sails for England to-day, the 23rd. instant, by the Japanese Mail Steamer Sanuki Maru".

In the event of your confirming Mr. Crow's dis- missal from the service, I heg to recommend that Mr.F.Browne, Assistant Government Analyst, be promoted to fill the vacancy. Mr. Browne is reported by the Principal Civil Medical Officer to have ably performed Mr. Crow's duties during the latter's recent leave of absence in England and to be in every way well fitted for the post of Analyst and Apothecary,
If Mr. Browne's promotion is approved, early steps should be taken to select a candidate for the post of Assist- ant Analyst and Apothecary on the terms and conditions set forth in the enclosed paper of particulars.
I may add with reference to the penultimate paragraph of my despatch No.338 that Mr. Crow has abandoned his intention of memorializing you in regard to his case. I have The Right Honourable
